Prayer for Ukraine2/24/2022 On Thursday, Russia launched military attacks against Ukraine in more than a dozen locations across the country, including near the capital, Kyiv. Week of Compassion is in frequent contact with our partners in Europe, who are monitoring the rapidly developing situation and planning for the displacement of people and the humanitarian needs that are likely to come from this invasion. As we learn more, we will share updates about how Disciples will extend care and compassion to those affected. We join with you and with people around the world in praying for peace.
Ever Loving God, Today we are filled with many emotions in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Humanity has once again chosen selfishness and death, when we know you to be the God of abundance and life. Love Brings You Home2/23/2022 Recently we lifted up the Stephens family and the hope - and new home - they found through Week of Compassion’s partners, the Miami Valley Long-Term Recovery Operations Group and Brethren Disaster Ministries.
Many of the images and stories featuring prominently in this year's Special Offering materials are from Dayton, Ohio, and many include the Stephenses. This video - Love brings you home - highlights their story, and their joy. What an absolute joy to share photos from their recent home blessing! The Stephenses have a beautiful and secure home, with personal touches like a handmade quilt. (Brethren Disaster Ministries’ long-term project leader Sammy Deacon joined the Stephens family for their celebration day.) The Week of Compassion Special Offering, received in most congregations this Sunday February 27, brings home the power of community, and the deep truth that faith, hope, and love remain. Thank you for your gifts, this week and all year long. Cascading Compassion2/22/2022 ![]() When Hurricane Harvey parked itself over Texas and the Gulf Coast in 2017, the wind and water damage left in its wake were widespread and significant. Damage left unrepaired, or poorly done, only got worse as time and further storms - including the week long ice storm and freeze last February - carried on. With funds from a Week of Compassion grant, partners at Mosaic in Action have been hard at work helping families find solutions - and the results are a ripple effect of recovery. ![]() Love is shelter. Love is a listening ear. Love is community. Love is a hopeful future. Love is a path forward. When all else seems lost, love remains. On Memorial Day 2019, tornadoes swept through the Miami Valley of Ohio, destroying thousands of homes and apartments and leaving a trail of downed trees and power lines in their wake. Many of the tornado-affected families have had to relocate multiple times since the tornadoes due to substandard housing conditions and inflated rent. Two years after the storm, the Stephens family was still unable to find adequate living quarters. "Hospitality Looks Different"2/10/2022
![]() Many of us have gone weeks, months, or even more than a year, without seeing our beloveds during the pandemic. Meanwhile, family separation has been an even harder and longer reality for many immigrants. From March 21, 2020 through November 8, 2021 – 597 days – the U.S. land borders with Mexico and Canada were closed to non-citizens for non-essential travel. This pandemic policy meant that loved ones on either side of the border were physically unable to travel to one another by car. In other parts of the world, visa processing slowed to a trickle, or complete halt, for most U.S. embassies and consulates abroad. Entry to the U.S. remained closed to most. Responding in A Changing Landscape2/3/2022 ![]() As the relief, refugee, and development mission fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Week of Compassion works with partners to alleviate suffering throughout the world. As the world continues to shift, our deep desire is to continue responding as we have for decades, by making connections, with integrity and faithful stewardship, and accompanying communities to make long-term impact. Serving in the name of the whole church, we want to pursue broader partnerships and deeper engagement with congregations, toward our vision of a world where God’s people transform suffering into hope. |
