A Letter on Ukraine3/24/2022 ![]() Grace and peace, Disciples. Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ, and with our deepest gratitude for each of you and for this ministry. In the first days after the February 24 start of the Russian attacks on Ukraine, the humanitarian response, led especially by faith-focused communities, was immediate and significant. Week of Compassion has been in constant contact with our ecumenical partners at home and around the world. Willing to Respond3/22/2022 ![]() We are excited to be part of the launch of a new tool for networking congregations for disaster preparedness and response: Willing to Respond! As a registry of willing congregations and a library of vetted resources, this tool will help us connect with you and introduce you to other congregations and organizations in your area. It also provides your congregation with training, tips, and tools to reduce your risk and be ready to help your neighbors when disaster strikes. partnering to respond in Ukraine3/15/2022 ![]() For us, like for many others, every day Ukraine is on our hearts. So begins a letter from Pieter and Nora Kalkan, missionaries to the Czech Republic, writing to their church family in the (American Baptist) International Ministries. Through IM, and the European Baptist Federation, Week of Compassion is on the ground in Ukraine and surrounding nations, responding to the emergent needs of those fleeing the country, and those who remain internally displaced by the war. As stories of devastation and terror fill the international news, stories of compassion, generosity, and life-giving help flow in from our ecumenical partners as well. an update from Ukraine3/10/2022
the latest on Ukraine3/4/2022 ![]() Just more than a week ago, Russia moved military forces into Ukraine, attacking more than a dozen city centers. From the beginning, we have prayed together, and immediately engaged with our global and domestic ecumenical partners to respond to emergent needs and craft an ongoing and long-term response. photo: Finn Church Aid/Antti Yrjonen the work of Ash Wednesday3/2/2022 ![]() Today we are part of something very particular – perhaps peculiar – in the life of the church. In this Ash Wednesday moment, we bless dirt. Ash and oil, mixed together and marked on our skin. We pray that somehow it becomes a blessing. We recall the very moments of creation – when God took the dust of the ground and formed a human vessel and breathed into its being the very breath of life. We remember that we are created from the dust, and to the dust we will return. We are divine creatures in human vessels. Responding in Ukraine2/28/2022 ![]() On Thursday February 24, Russia launched military attacks against Ukraine in more than a dozen locations across the country, including near the capital, Kyiv. In the days since, we have joined with you and with people around the world in praying for peace. We have also joined our ecumenical partners to put those prayers into action. In the first few days, it has been reported that nearly half a million Ukrainians have been displaced, fleeing to safety in nearby countries as military attacks consume their homes. |
