CHILDREN’S SERMON
by Rev. Mary Lu Johnston Minister of Education and Music University Christian Church Austin, Texas
For this children’s sermon you will need the following (you will want to adjust the number of cans to equal the number of children in your congregation):
2 cans chicken broth 1 can tomato sauce 1 can diced tomatoes 1 can whole kernel corn 1 can new potatoes 1 can sliced carrots
You may wish to ask each child in your congregation ahead of time to bring one of the items listed above to worship (make sure to have extra cans available for visitors and children who might have forgotten), or you may wish to have the items above in a sack or box so that each child may select an item as the children gather for the sermon.
Say to the children:
What can of food did you select (or bring)?
Allow each child to name his/her can of food.
Ask the children:
Would your can alone make a tasty and healthy meal?
You will need to respond to the children’s answers, then say:
I wonder what would happen if we took our cans of food and added them all together! What do you suppose we would have then? We would have soup, and it would be very tasty and very healthy! And do you know what? We would have enough soup for all of us and more! Wouldn’t that be great? Enough soup for us and morefrom a few cans of food!
This Sunday (next Sunday) we will be collecting the Week of Compassion offering. This morning (next Sunday morning) people in churches all over our country will each bring a small amount of money to give as a gift to help people all over the world. And when we all put our small amounts of money together, we will have a whole lot of money that will help a whole lot of peoplelike our few cans of food can make soup for a whole lot more!
Options for follow through:
Have the children take the canned goods to a local food pantry or soup kitchen. Use the canned goods and have the children prepare soup for the afternoon or evening children’s fellowship group meal. Invite everyone in the congregation to bring a can and use the cans to prepare a Week of Compassion awareness soup supper. |
